The History of Whisky Sour

The roots of the Whisky Sour can be traced back to the 19th century, where sailors and travelers sought creative ways to make their spirits more palatable during long voyages. The genius behind the Whisky Sour lies in its simplicity, with just three key components – whisky, lemon juice, and sweetness – coming together to form a harmonious and balanced elixir. Over time, this enchanting concoction gained popularity, finding its way into bars and cocktail books worldwide, solidifying its status as an enduring classic.

To craft an exceptional Whisky Sour, the choice of ingredients is paramount. Let’s take a closer look at the key players that ensure the cocktail’s perfection:

Ingredients Used

Selecting the Perfect Whisky

To create an exceptional Whisky Sour, selecting the right whisky is key. Here are some popular choices:

1. Bourbon Whiskey: Bourbon, known for its sweet and approachable flavor profile, is a popular choice for the Whisky Sour. Produced primarily in the United States, it is made from at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak barrels. The notes of vanilla, caramel, and oak in Bourbon harmonize beautifully with the citrusy brightness of the Whisky Sour, creating a well-rounded and inviting cocktail.

2. Rye Whiskey: With its spicy and bold character, Rye whiskey brings an exciting twist to the Whisky Sour. Made from at least 51% rye grains, this whiskey style offers a robust flavor profile with peppery, herbal, and sometimes fruity notes. The spiciness of Rye whiskey complements the zesty lemon juice, adding complexity and a hint of adventure to the cocktail.

3. Tennessee Whiskey: Similar to Bourbon, Tennessee whiskey undergoes the charcoal filtering process known as the Lincoln County Process, imparting a smoother and mellower taste. The subtle smokiness and caramel undertones of Tennessee whiskey can provide a unique twist to the Whisky Sour, making it an intriguing choice for experimentation.

4. Single Malt Scotch Whisky: For those seeking a touch of refinement, Single Malt Scotch whisky offers an elegant option for the Whisky Sour. Made from 100% malted barley and typically aged in oak barrels, this whisky boasts a complex and diverse range of flavors, from fruity and floral to nutty and peaty, depending on the region of origin. The choice of Single Malt Scotch can add a sophisticated layer of sophistication to your cocktail.

Consider your flavor preference and quality when choosing the perfect whisky. Experimentation is encouraged to discover your ideal flavor combination.

Try 2 parts whisky, 1 part freshly squeezed lemon juice, 2 parts caster sugar and 9 parts crushed ice/chilled water. Antidote to summer heat. . . !

Refined and relaxing. Feels good to sit back in your chair, hear the clink of ice on glass and repeat ‘whiskey sour’ to yourself. Great name cool drink.

A very basic recipie. Try 1. 5 shots of wisky or gin, a shot of sugar syrup, and 1. 5 shots of fresh lime juice (which most prefer to lemon. Make sure to shake well with ice (no shaker? no problem! just use two glasses!) and serve over crushed ice. Perfecto!

By far my favourite drink. I’d always preferred it with limes but recently tried it with half lemon and half lime which was simply stunning.
