Stir with cracked ice. Strain into cocktail glass. Add optional splash of carbonated water. Garnish with twist of lemon peel.

In every book I have found, and as I have had it served in Italy, from where this drink comes, the vermouth is rosso (red). Originally, this would be Punt e Mes, the original Italian vermouth, but a more available Martini & Rossi Red is fine.
